Haute Savoie 7 day walking holiday (click here for map)

This is a French holiday region abounding in natural beauty!

Our walking route averages 4 hours a day and takes you  from the Valley D’Abondance through to the shores of Lake Geneva (or Lac Leman as it is known in France). The scenery is stunning, the food a gastronomic delight, and as so many of the hotels of the Haute Savoie are geared up for the winter skiing market, they are modern with excellent facilities.

Throughout the Haute-Savoie, man has learnt to live with natural surroundings that are as extraordinary as they are grandiose, with stunning lakes, valleys, mountain peaks and passes. Nowadays, locals and visitors alike can explore these magnificent landscapes in the national and regional parks and nature reserves, where waterfalls, cirques and gorges add their own stunning contribution to the beauty of the Haute-Savoie.

The varied fauna inhabiting the parks and nature reserves of the Haute-Savoie includes ibex, chamois, golden eagles, marmots and hare.

The region is also renowned for its flora, with Pink Lady’s Slipper, Alpine Sea Holly, Alpine Columbine and more than two thousand species adding colour and variety to our Alpine meadows.

From high-altitude French Alpine gardens to lakeside parks and gardens, from traditional vegetable gardens to blossom-filled orchards, man has left his mark on nature in many varied ways. Explore the exotic Japanese garden in Évian, or marvel at the discreet charm of the Cinq Sens gardens in Yvoire.

From Lake Geneva to the foothills of Mt Blanc, this is truly a magic area!

Day to Day Programme (click here for map)

Day 1: Arrival in La Chappelle D’abondance

Day 2 & 3:  Circular walks which include the most spectacular views in the area with the opportunity to witness the local wildlife and fauna. At just under 6000 feet, the valley views are breathtaking!

Day 4:  Ridge walking to the pretty town of Abondance where you will have time to explore the local abbey and enjoy more of the region’s culinary delights.

Day 5: Another breathtaking day walking by the river, and then the heights, to your superbly sited hotel on the edge of the valley in Vacheresse

Day 6: Transfer to Thonon-les-Bains on the shores of Lake Geneva.

The town’s architectural heritage stands as a reminder of the great history of Savoie with the imposing Chateau de Ripaille, built by the first duke of Savoy through to the baroque church of Saint Hippolyte where Saint Frances of Sales preached.

Days 6 & 7: An opportunity to explore this area which looks across the Lake to Switzerland.

There are local vineyards to visit, or take a lake taxi over to Yvoire and experience the unique garden of the five senses. The lake taxi even crosses over to Lausanne or Geneva where you could spend an entire holiday exploring the Swiss treasures!

Finally, the gastronomic traditions of the French shore are drawn from the area’s local produce. The delicate flavours of fish from the lake are complimented by the robust culinary traditions of the Savoy, featuring mainly cheeses and charcuterie.
