Day by day
Day 1 Arrival at Le Port de Domme
Arrive in Sarlat, where your included taxi takes you to Hôtel Le Périgord, set in a quiet, tree-lined park at the foot of the Domme hillside. There’s time to settle in and swim in the indoor or outdoor pool, or book the hot tub, sauna or a treatment. At 6.45pm we welcome you with wine and canapés on the bar terrace before dinner.
Included: Welcome drinks and canapés
Overnight: Le Port de Domme · Hôtel Le Périgord · Dinner included
Day 2 Circular walk to La Roque-Gageac
7.4 km (4.6 miles) · ↑ 200 m (about 650 ft) ↓ 190 m (about 600 ft)
Quiet lanes and a rocky clifftop path, with views across to Castelnaud, lead you down to La Roque-Gageac, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages, its golden houses tucked between a towering cliff and the river. Spend the rest of the day as you like: drift along the Dordogne on a traditional gabare boat, paddle a kayak, climb to the medieval fort in the cliff face, or walk on to the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac or the Château de Castelnaud. A gentle lane leads you back to the hotel.
Overnight: Le Port de Domme · Hôtel Le Périgord · Dinner included
Day 3 Circular walk to Domme
4.6 or 10.7 km (2.9 or 6.6 miles) · up to ↑ 170 m (about 550 ft) ↓ 170 m (about 550 ft)
Climb the old lanes to Domme, a 13th-century bastide perched 150 m (about 500 ft) above the river and another of the Plus Beaux Villages. The view from its clifftop belvedere takes in the whole valley, with your hotel and La Roque-Gageac below. Lunch is on us: a tasting platter of local cheese and charcuterie at Les Caves du Château. Vegetarian platters are available (not vegan): just let us know when you book. Afterwards, explore the cave beneath the market hall, the largest in the Périgord Noir open to visitors, or the Porte des Tours, where imprisoned Knights Templar carved graffiti into the walls. Then there are two ways home: back the way you came ( 4.6 km (2.9 miles) in all), or the longer way along the river through Vitrac ( 10.7 km (6.6 miles), the walk on the map).
Included: Lunch platter in Domme
Overnight: Le Port de Domme · Hôtel Le Périgord · Dinner included
Day 4 Le Port de Domme to Sarlat
14.1 km (8.8 miles) · ↑ 210 m (about 700 ft) ↓ 150 m (about 500 ft)
The longest walk of the week, and much of it easy going. Farm lanes take you through Vitrac and past the Château de Montfort, high on its rock above the river, then you join the Voie Verte, a car-free greenway built along an old railway line, all the way into Sarlat. Visit the Truffle Museum this afternoon or tomorrow for a tour and tasting of the Périgord’s famous “black diamond”.
Included: Truffle Museum visit and tasting (today or tomorrow)
Overnight: Sarlat · Hôtel La Couleuvrine · Dinner included
Day 5 Circular walk around Sarlat
8.3 km (5.2 miles) · ↑ 180 m (about 600 ft) ↓ 180 m (about 600 ft)
A loop on quiet lanes and footpaths through the hills around Sarlat, with views over its lauze roofs and spires, before you wind back through the medieval centre: the cathedral, the Lantern of the Dead and Liberty Square. The afternoon is yours: ride the glass lift up the bell tower of the old Sainte-Marie church, now the covered market, browse the shops, or stop at a patisserie. At 6pm (or another time if you prefer), enjoy a private wine tasting in the Cave Chapelle XV at Aux 3 Sens, a beautifully restored 15th-century vaulted cellar that was once a chapel. Each wine comes with a small dish from chef Christian, chosen to go with it, and the dishes change from one tasting to the next. Dinner tonight is your choice of Sarlat’s restaurants.
Included: Wine tasting with paired dishes
Overnight: Sarlat · Hôtel La Couleuvrine · Bed & breakfast — dinner out

Practical information
Getting there and away
By air. Bergerac is the nearest airport with flights from the UK, about 1 hour 15 minutes from Sarlat by road. Brive–Vallée de la Dordogne is about 50 minutes away, and Bordeaux and Toulouse around 2½ hours.
From further afield. From Australia, the USA and further afield, most long-haul flights land at Paris Charles de Gaulle, with connecting flights to Bordeaux or Toulouse, or a train from Paris to the region.
By train. Sarlat has its own station, on the line from Bordeaux via Bergerac. From Paris, take the TGV to Bordeaux and change, or take the train from Paris Austerlitz to Souillac and a 30-minute taxi to Sarlat. Your taxi from Sarlat to Hôtel Le Périgord is included.
By car. Calais to Sarlat is around 850 km, roughly 8 to 9 hours’ driving. If you’re driving, ask us about parking when you book.
Going home. The holiday ends in Sarlat after breakfast on day 6, with trains from Sarlat station towards Bordeaux.
Route finding
Our detailed route notes and maps come in digital form, so you always know where the next turn is.
We also email you GPX files, with simple instructions for using them on your phone, so you can see exactly where you are on the map.
It varies by route. Some sections are waymarked, and your route notes tell you where. The notes and GPS guide you the rest of the way.
Bring a smartphone with mobile data and a power bank. If you take a wrong turn, the GPX track shows you the way back, and we’re a call or WhatsApp away.
We’ve walked or cycled our Dordogne and Lot routes ourselves, so our notes come from first-hand experience.
Meals and dietary needs
Included: 5 breakfasts and 4 dinners, plus lunch in Domme. The day-by-day shows which nights include dinner.
Breakfast is usually French-style: fresh bread and croissants with butter and jam, and coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Some hotels add yoghurt, fruit or cheese.
Lunch is up to you, and it’s one of the pleasures of the day: pick up a picnic from a village bakery or market, or stop at a café along the way. On some days there are few shops on the route, so it’s worth buying lunch before you set off.
Tell us about any dietary needs when you book and we’ll let every hotel know. Vegetarian meals are no problem. Other needs, such as gluten-free food or a serious allergy, are harder for small country kitchens, so please talk to Cassie before you book, and always carry any medication you need.
Drinks aren’t included: anything you enjoy with dinner is simply settled with the hotel before you leave.
Your luggage
Whenever you change hotel, your bags are taken on for you, so they’re waiting when you arrive. Please have them ready at reception by 9am.
During the day you only need a daypack: water, snacks, a waterproof, sun cream and a hat, plus anything you’ll want before evening, such as medication.
Many of our hotels are in old buildings and some have no lift, so expect the odd flight of stairs with your bags.
One bag per person, up to 20 kg.
Hotels and check-in
You spend three nights at the 4★ Hôtel Le Périgord, with its indoor and outdoor pools, then two nights in Sarlat.
Rooms are usually ready from mid-afternoon, and check-out is usually by 10 or 11am. If you arrive early, the hotel will normally look after your bags while you explore.
Most rooms have a shower rather than a bath, as is usual in French country hotels.
The day-by-day above lists your hotels night by night, and we’ll send you full details with your booking confirmation.
Weather and when to go
Our season runs from April to October.
Spring brings wildflowers and fresh green valleys, with mild days that can still be showery; April mornings can be cool.
June and September are often the sweet spot: warm, settled and quieter, and September brings the grape harvest.
July and August are hot, often 30 °C or more in the afternoon, so set off early, carry plenty of water and plan a long lunch in the shade. Summer thunderstorms can be heavy but usually pass quickly.
October is golden and peaceful, with cooler days, shorter evenings and a little more rain.
Language
French is the language of the route. Most hotels speak some English, but in small villages, shops and cafés you’ll often find they don’t.
A few words go a long way and are always appreciated: bonjour as you walk into a shop, merci, and l’addition, s’il vous plaît when you’d like the bill.
Markets and things to book ahead
Sarlat’s big market fills the old town on Saturdays, with a smaller one on Wednesday mornings. Domme’s market is on Thursday mornings.
Your included tastings and visits are booked for you.
To see the cave art at Lascaux IV, in Montignac about 30 minutes’ drive from Sarlat, book tickets online before you travel, especially in summer.
