When to go walking or cycling in the Dordogne
Our season runs from April to October. May and September are the months our guests choose most, and here’s what each month is like on the routes.

Month by month
- April
- Our season starts. Spring brings wildflowers and fresh green valleys, with mild days that can still be showery, and April mornings can be cool.
- May
- One of the two months our guests choose most. In the Ardèche, May and June are lovely, with long days and meadows full of wildflowers.
- June
- Often the sweet spot: warm and settled, with long days, and ahead of the summer bustle of July and August.
- July and August
- Hot and busy, often 30 °C or more in the afternoon, so set off early, carry plenty of water and plan a long lunch in the shade. Summer thunderstorms can be heavy but usually pass quickly; in the Ardèche hills, be ready for afternoon thunderstorms.
- September
- The other month our guests choose most: often warm and settled, with the grape and walnut harvests under way. In the Ardèche, clear, crisp days.
- October
- Golden and peaceful, with cooler days, shorter evenings and a little more rain. The woods turn red and gold with autumn colours, and it’s my favourite month to walk.

Markets on the way
- Sarlat’s big market fills the old town on Saturdays, with a smaller one on Wednesday mornings.
- Domme’s market is on Thursday mornings.
- Souillac’s market is on Friday mornings.
There are many more markets in the towns and villages along our routes: see our guide to market days.

Before you choose your dates
Weather changes quickly in the Ardèche hills, so carry a waterproof every day. A few holidays have days to avoid starting, because restaurants on the route close: the FAQ lists them, and each holiday page has notes on the weather under Practical information.
